SSB Interview Highlights

What is the SSB Interview?

The Services Selection Board (SSB) is an organization under the Ministry of Defence that selects candidates for the Indian Armed Forces as commissioned officers. Aspirants can be called for the SSB interview through direct entries like TGC, UES, NCC Special Entry, or by clearing written exams such as CDS, NDA, and AFCAT.

The AFCAT SSB interview is one of the most crucial stages of selection. To succeed, many aspirants choose SSB coaching in Dehradun, where expert faculty guide candidates through the five-day process that evaluates intelligence, physical fitness, leadership qualities, and overall personality.

The SSB interview process includes Screening, Psychological Tests, Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, Personal Interview, and the Final Conference. Through professional SSB coaching in Dehradun, candidates learn to improve decision-making, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills—qualities essential for becoming a future officer.

Success in the SSB interview requires proper preparation, confidence, and the ability to showcase officer-like qualities, all of which are nurtured with the right coaching and guidance.

Aspirants who wish to serve the nation must understand the SSB procedure in detail and train under expert guidance. Many candidates choose SSB coaching in Dehradun to prepare effectively and increase their chances of success.

The SSB selection procedure includes tests of physical ability, psychological evaluation, personality assessment, and intelligence. But how is this process carried out? What does a candidate have to do? Curious? Here is the day-to-day procedure of the SSB Service Selection Board.

Day wise Interview Session

SSB Training
Day 1: Screening Test – The First Filter

Day 1 is the elimination round. Almost 60–70% of candidates are screened out here. If you clear this stage, you continue for the remaining four days.

Tests Conducted on Day 1:

1. OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating Test):

    • Objective reasoning test (verbal and non-verbal).
    • Includes puzzles, coding-decoding, series, analogies, etc.
    • Time is limited; accuracy and speed matter.

Preparation Tip: Practice reasoning daily from R.S. Aggarwal or online mock sets. Focus on managing time, as even a few seconds per question matter.

2. PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test):

  • A blurred picture is shown for 30 seconds.
  • Candidates must write a short story in 4 minutes (covering characters, age, mood, situation, and outcome).
  • After writing, a group discussion is held where each candidate narrates their story and collectively builds a common story.
  •

Preparation Tip:

  • Use the Situation → Action → Outcome format for writing.
  • Keep your narration clear, confident, and within 45 seconds.
  • In discussion, avoid aggression; contribute constructively and guide towards a group consensus.
  •

Day 1 Goal: Demonstrate clarity, logical thinking, and teamwork. Candidates who undergo professional SSB coaching in Dehradun often gain an edge here through guided practice and feedback.

Day 2 focuses on your inner personality, thought process, and values. Assessors want to know how you think under time pressure. Memorization does not work here—only honest, positive, and consistent responses will help.

Tests Conducted on Day 2:

1. TAT (Thematic Apperception Test):

  • You will be shown 12 pictures (including one blank slide).
  • For each picture, write a story in 4 minutes.
  • The story should include Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Preparation Tip: Write optimistic, action-oriented stories where the main character solves problems logically and benefits society/team.

2. WAT (Word Association Test):

  • 60 words are shown one after another for 15 seconds each.
  • You must form the first thought that comes to mind as a meaningful sentence.

Preparation Tip: Keep sentences short, positive, and realistic. For example, if the word is “Failure,” you may write: “Failure teaches lessons for future success.”

3. SRT (Situation Reaction Test):

  • 60 situations are given; you must write quick reactions in 30 minutes.
  • Example: “You see an accident victim on the road, what will you do?”
  • Response: “Take the victim to the nearest hospital and inform police/family.”

Preparation Tip: Keep responses practical, lawful, and time-sensitive.

4. SD (Self-Description):

  • Write how your parents, teachers, friends, and you yourself perceive your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Also include your life goals.

Preparation Tip: Gather feedback from close ones and keep your SD authentic. Avoid exaggeration.

Day 2 Goal: Demonstrate a natural thought process, problem-solving ability, and positivity. Many aspirants choose professional SSB coaching in Dehradun to practice psychology tests under expert guidance, as structured training helps improve speed, clarity, and confidence. With the right SSB coaching in Dehradun, candidates learn to stay consistent and project their true personality effectively.

On Day 3 and Day 4, the Group Testing Officer (GTO) conducts outdoor and group activities to evaluate leadership, teamwork, stamina, and practical intelligence.

Tasks Conducted:

  • Group Discussion (GD):

    • Two topics are given—current affairs and general issues.
    • Speak logically with examples, but also listen and build on others’ points.
  • Group Planning Exercise (GPE):

    • A problem map is shown (with multiple issues like accidents, fire, etc.).
    • You must create a plan with priorities and resources.
  • Progressive Group Task (PGT):

    • Group is given obstacles and helping materials like ropes and planks.
    • Team must cross obstacles using rules and logic.
  • Half Group Task (HGT):

    • Same as PGT but with smaller groups, giving more chances to show leadership.
  • Individual Obstacles (IO):

    • 10 physical tasks like rope climbing, jumping, balancing, crawling, etc.
    • Marks are given for each completed task.
  • Command Task (CT):

    • You act as a commander, lead helpers, and complete an obstacle.
    • Assesses confidence, clarity, and decision-making.
  • Lecturette:

    • Pick one topic from 4 choices and speak for 3 minutes.
    • Topics are usually general knowledge, current affairs, or social issues.
  • Final Group Task (FGT):

    • Similar to PGT but final teamwork assessment.

Preparation Tip:

  • In GD & GPE: Be logical, calm, and structured.
  • In outdoor tasks: Focus on teamwork and safety, not just speed.
  • For IO: Improve stamina, balance, and fitness.
  • In Lecturette: Practice speaking on random topics daily with clear structure (Intro → Body → Conclusion).

Day 3 & 4 Goal: Demonstrate balanced leadership, group spirit, and problem-solving. Many aspirants join SSB coaching in Dehradun to gain hands-on practice in GTO tasks under expert supervision, which helps them build confidence, fitness, and leadership qualities effectively.

The last day is the Conference, where all assessors sit together and review your overall performance

Tasks Conducted:

  • You will be asked simple questions like:
  • “How was your stay here?”
  • “Which task did you enjoy the most?”
  • “Where do you think you performed best?”
  • The goal is to check your confidence, honesty, and consistency.

Day 5 Goal: Be natural, polite, and self-aware.
