Understanding the Three SSB Assessors: Psychologist, GTO and Interviewing Officer

Clearing the NDA written examination is an important achievement, but candidates must also perform well in the Services Selection Board (SSB) selection process.

The SSB assessment is conducted over multiple days and evaluates a candidate’s personality, psychological responses, social behaviour, leadership potential and suitability for a career as an officer in the Armed Forces.

Three assessors play important roles in this process:

1. Psychologist

The Psychologist evaluates candidates through a series of psychological tests designed to understand their natural thought processes, responses and personality traits.

The main tests include:

  • TAT – Thematic Apperception Test
  • WAT – Word Association Test
  • SRT – Situation Reaction Test
  • SDT – Self Description Test

The focus is on understanding a candidate’s thinking pattern, maturity, decision-making and consistency.

2. Group Testing Officer (GTO)

The Group Testing Officer evaluates candidates through individual and group-based outdoor and indoor activities.

These activities include:

  • Group Discussion
  • Group Planning Exercise
  • Progressive Group Task
  • Half Group Task
  • Individual Obstacles
  • Command Task
  • Lecturette
  • Final Group Task

The GTO observes qualities such as teamwork, leadership, cooperation, initiative, confidence and the ability to work under pressure.

3. Interviewing Officer (IO)

The Interviewing Officer conducts the personal interview to understand the candidate’s background, personality, interests, experiences and motivation to join the Armed Forces.

Questions may cover:

  • Family and educational background
  • Hobbies and personal interests
  • Daily routine and responsibilities
  • General awareness and current affairs
  • Strengths and areas of improvement
  • Motivation for joining the Armed Forces

The interview is an opportunity for candidates to express themselves honestly and confidently.
